Question

I have the feeling that something like a pill is stuck in the back of my throat, at times it feels like I may throw up even though I dont feel nauseaus. It seems to "dislodge" and travel down making it feel like heartburn which then moves towards my back. Any ideas?

Answer

Hello,

Welcome to Just Answer and thanks for your question. The sensation of having something stuck in your throat is called globus, and it is quite common with gastroesophageal reflux, even when there is no associated heartburn. You can try one of the medications for GERD (like Prilosec OTC), raise the head of your bed 6-8" higher than the foot, and avoid foods that lessen esophageal sphincter contractions like peppermint, chocolate, anything caffeinated, alcohol, greasy foods, spicy foods, and citrus. Eating several small meals a day instead of 3 larger ones can also help. If you aren't better in a couple of weeks you should see your physician for an exam.

Thank you! Just a quick further question, is this an ongoing thing or can i expect this to go away. Also, this feeling of needing to vomit, is it likely to actually "follow through" so to speak?

Accepted Answer

Depending on your own reflexes, you may or may not vomit. Most people don't. If it is GERD, you should feel better within a week even, but you should still see your doctor. One thing that can be going on with GERD is an infection in the stomach by a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. It is the same bacterium that causes stomach ulcers. Treatment would involve antibiotics to kill the bug as well as acid reducer. Not everyone with GERD has an H. pylori infection, but it is prudent for your practitioner to rule it out. If it is caused by H. pylori, then you should be cured after the antibiotics. If it isn't you may need to watch what you eat in the future as well as now, and take medication.
