Question

I have an Iomega portable hard drive. I saved data from my PC to it before reformatting the hard drive on the PC. After attempting to connect the hard drive to my computer to reload my data, the hard drive simply beeps and flashes, and the computer will not recognize the drive on the USB port. How can I get my data off the drive?

You may just need to download and install the drivers for the portable hard drive.

If you can provide me the model number of the drive, I'll try to locate a link to the drivers for you.

model Iomega LPHD-UP

But why would I need to do that? It didn't require drivers to download the data to the hard drive in the first place? And what about the beeping? Still, I'll try anything at this point; I don't want to lose my data.

Do you mean that the hard drive repeatedly beeps, or just beeps once?

If it is repeatedly beeping, you may be dealing with an internal failure of some sort. Despite my best efforts, I am unable to find any information on what a repeated beeping may indicate with this particular drive.

If this is the case, I would recommend contacting the manufacturer, Iomega, on their website. You can head there and select "Support" and choose your hard drive, and then enter its serial number and do an online chat.

If it's only a single beep, that's not a concern. Does it appear that your PC is detecting the drive at all? Do you receive any error messages?

It beeps repeatedly. And no, it does not appear that the computer is detecting the drive at all. I don't get any error messages. I plug it in, using the company's cable with two USB port (it's needed for the high speed transfer of data), but the drive does not show on my PC. The beeping is constant. Do you have a contact number for the manufacturer?

Answer

The fact that it's repeatedly beeping and that the PC is detecting nothing makes me think there is an internal failure somewhere.

There are several ways to contact Iomega, the manufacturer. They charge $25 for phone support, but you can receive support on their forums for free, and a live online chat for free if your drive is still in warranty.

And I apologize that I was not able to be of more assistance.

That's okay, you have basically confirmed what I was thinking all along, that there is something that is wrong internally with the drive, and that my 2500 pictures and 3000 songs (all of which I paid for over a 6-year time span) may be lost. I will take your lead and contact Iomega directly. Thank you.

Accepted Answer

When you contact Iomega, ask them about their data recovery services. They may be a bit expensive, but I know how irreplaceable photos can be.

Definitely check into it... and if your drive is under warranty, they should provide the data recovery for free since it's an internal failure.

I wish you the best of luck.
