i live in minnesota and was working in california and the papers were left with my dad and was told to read them to me

Yes, so long as your father was in your home when they were delivered, it was reasonable from his demeanor for the process server to believe that he lived there, the process service was sufficient. Service of process can be delivered to the last known home or address, and left with anyone over the age of 18 who is of sound mind and who the process server reasonably believes resides at the home. As such, service of process delivered to your father at your home is probably sufficient service.
