Hello Smiler,

I can understand your fears of breast cancer since you have noticed a change in how you are feeling.

Have you felt any breast lumps on your exam?

Accepted Answer

That's okay, it is hard to get used to examining your breasts. It is important to try to get used to what your own breast tissue feels like, therefore you will be aware if a change occurs (I am sure you probably already know this).

As far as the breast symptoms you are experiencing, it is very common to have breast pain, fullness and discomfort when starting the birth control pills. I suspect that this is likely why you are feeling what you are feeling (hormones may still be a bit off, even after stopping the pill recently).

Most of the time, blood work will not reveal breast cancer. If you had a sed rate (ESR) done and it was elevated, it may indicate that there is inflammation going on somewhere in the body but it is a very non-specific test and is not done to screen for breast cancer.

It is not common for breast cancer to cause breast pain.
I would try not to worry too much, if that is possible.
In some people, caffeine can increase breast pain so you may want to decrease your intake for a few days.

Let me know if you have any follow up questions,

Dr Abby
