Question

My dog (27 pounds) injested some rat poisoning with Bromethalin yesterday. Unfortunately, the vet I took him to did not know to induce vomiting, although that is what I was requesting. He was happy that the dog hadn't shown any signs of vomitting and released him that day with a shot of Vitamin K. Now just a little over 24 hrs later, I am worried that he did not get the proper treatment and I don't know if taking him to another vet will help? He is showing no signs of illness at this point.

Answer

Hello and thanks for researching this very important question!

In short, you were correct to ask that your dog's stomach be emptied. This toxin is one that produces increased pressure in the brain, and not breakage of small blood vessels. Vitamin K is not effective against its neurotoxic action.
Merck Veterinary Manual Rodenticide info here.

Since this compound was allowed to be absorbed into your dog's body, he may still develop neurologic symptoms and illness...in your place I would definitely have him evaluated by another veterinarian who is more familiar with the many kinds of rodenticides on the market.

Okay, I am planning on taking him to another vet this afternoon, based on your advice, but just in case this doctor is also of the mindset that Vitamin K "should do the trick" is there something else the vet should be doing at this point to help him? I have read that activated charcoal can help, but is that also too late? What treatment would you recommend at this point?

Accepted Answer

Activated charcoal would not be a bad idea...just in case there is some chemical still in his digestive organs, although dogs intestines move rather quickly. It is certainly not harmful in any way.

Unfortunately, this neurotoxin can produce symptoms a while after the initial exposure.

Copy out this information to take to the vet with you...it contains a full list of treatments, depending on what kinds of symptoms come up:

If you get stalled...make the investment of asking that they call Animal Poison Control...you'll have to pay about $60.00 for the consutation, but will get an "official" recommendation about how to treat him.
