Answer

Hi,

I'm so sorry to hear this happened to you and your dog on Sunday. Thank goodness he wasn't hurt! He anxious and stressed by this occurrence, and it may take a while for him to regain his confidence and feel like himself again. You can discuss with your vet, a prescription for a low dose anti-anxiety medication, which may help him feel less stressed at this time. You don't want him to feel really tired and out of it, but just give him something to help him feel calmer.

You can also try 'Rescue Remedy for Pets'; this is a homeopathic 'flower essence' that is used for calming. Follow dosing directions on the product. It's available in most pet supply stores and also online. You can add it to his water or a small amount of food--it's a liquid. http://www.entirelypets.com/rescueremedypet.html

If he's reluctant to get in the car, because he associates it with this unfortunate incident, try coaxing him with toys or healthy treats, just when the car is in the driveway and you're not preparing to go anywhere; you can throw a favorite toy into the car, have him go after it, and then he gets out, and you repeat the action again.. 'Desensitizing' him to the car in this way, should help, if he only associates it with pleasurable activities.

I hope things improve for your furry boy, soon!
