Answer
Thank you for your post!
With intensive care - yes, there are MANY times when renal failure can be improved. We may never get the kidney values back to normal - but we may improve them enough to get your kitty feeling better again and then can continue some at-home care.
In general, this link may help when understanding and thinking about kidney failure:

That link discusses renal failure, important laboratory values, and even diet options - both commercial and home cooked.
Possible treatmets that may REALLY help:
- Antacids, such as Pepcid A/C (famotidine) - the kidney normally excretes acids, but when they do not work, acids build up in the body
- Subcutaneous fluids to be given by you at home - when the kidneys do not work well, they can no hold in water. This fluid administration will help with hydration and flushing out the kidneys.
- Depending on the phosphorus level - phosphate binders such as Alternagel can also be considered.
- As far as food - the most common used food for cats in kidney failure is a prescription commercial diet called Hills K/D - which is lower in protein and other chemicals that a diseased kidney can no longer handle. If this is not tolerated, there are other diet options, both prescription and home-cooked to consider.

How long should I leave her in the hospital, Is there a maximum amount of time??
Accepted Answer
Typically I recommend keeping the cat in the hospital until they completely plateau, then slowly wean off the IV fluids to make sure they do not go back up immediately.
For example on IV fluids
Day 1 - 7.5
Day 2 - 5.5
Day 3 - 4.5
Day 4 - 4.5
Since it did not change from day 3 to 4, then I would decrease the IV fluids for a day and make sure on day 5 it did not worsen.
