Question

I have a Gateway GN5472 with 2 gb memory. My system always runs at 53% CPU and about the same for my memory even when no applications are running. I go to the task manager and see the high usage numbers but nothing is running and the fan runs almost all the time also. Is there something I can do to correct this? Optional Information: Computer OS: Windows Vista Browser: IE and Firefox Already Tried: Looking for programs that may be running in the background, did a full system scan using McAfee and Malware Bytes

Info Request

We need to find out what is using system CPU. Right click the taskbar at the bottom of your screen and click Task Manager. In Task Manager, go to the "Processes" tab. Then at the bottom of the Task Manager window, click "Show processes from all users."

You should be able to browse through the list now and find out which application is using the CPU. Let me know what the name is.

Info Request

There should be more programs in the list after you click "Show all processes from all users" those programs you mentioned are barely using the CPU

Answer

Looks like the printer spooler is the one hogging the CPU. Check each one of your installed printers to see if there are any jobs in the query. To do this:
  1. Start menu
  2. Control Panel
  3. Under "Hardware and Sound" you should see "Printers" click "Printers"
    graphic
    View Full Image
  4. This will open the printers window and you should see a list of all your printers. Double click each one of them open and make sure there are no Jobs in any of them.

    View Full Image
Let me know if that does the trick,

Had a print job waiting in my HP all in one 1310 Canceled it but spooler is still about 50 and so is CPU. Should I try end process? Would that cause a problem?

Answer

Restarting would do the same thing. Since that didn't help, let's clean out your spooler folder. Please choose Computer from the Start menu and navigate to this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\PRINTERS

If you see anything in this folder, just delete it. You may get a box asking you for permission. Accept it. After this, restart your computer and check the spooler process.

there is file 0002.SPL - 'Shockwave' that the system will not let me delete. Says it is in open in another program.

Answer

OK. Let's stop the spooler.
  1. Press the Windows Key + R on your keyboard (at the same time)
  2. This will bring up the Run dialog.
  3. Type: services.msc and press enter.
  4. The Services window will open, in the list of Services look for "Printer Spooler"
  5. Double-click Printer Spooler and click "Stop."
  6. Now go back to the C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\PRINTERS folder and try to delete everything in there again.
Let me know if it worked this time,
