I am on unemployment and checks come on three days later than rent is due .She has told several of my neighbors , I can't pay my rent because I spend my money on fast food and other things so I can't pay my rent on time. She went as far as telling a friend , he's not aloud to come to my appt. anymore. She tells other tenets I smoke pot and to call the police.I hope thats enough info kind of embarassing.

What kind of information do you need i have told you everthing there is to tell isn't there some kind of privacy act to protect against this .

Accepted Answer

Thank you. No, there is not a privacy law that prevents the landlord from doing that. Is it against the law? No. Is it unprofessional? Yes.

Now, if the landlord is telling others that you smoke pot and if you don't, then you can demand that your landlord take the statement back. If the landlord doesn't, then you can meet with a local attorney to review your options to sue your landlord for slander. Accusing someone of a crime, when no crime was committed is slander.

Good luck and best wishes! I hope that you find this information to be helpful and this answer to be ACCEPTable!
