Question

"03 996TT - Car cranks but won't start. Durametric code reader shows P0335 Engine Speed Sensor Signal - open circuit. I cleaned plug connector at RR wheel and checked wire from there to sensor. Sensor mounted near top of trans case. How do you check / replace this sensor?

Answer

to properly check that sensor you would need a scope to tap in to the wiring to see if you are getting a proper signal from the sensor. The first thing I wold check is the wiring between the sensor and the DME control unit, if the wiring is good I would replace the sensor.

OK - will check between connector and DME but wire is buried behind motor and cannot really access. Assuming sensor is bad, how is it replaced? There is really no access to the cap screw holding it in from underneath the car. Does trans need to be dropped?

Answer

you might have to loosen the trans mount and lower it a bit to gain access

Trans is mounted to engine - don't you have to remove 2 engine cradle bolts and lower as assembly?

Answer

I think it would be easier to do loosen the trans mount from the body, you might have to take out the drive shaft that gose to the front, and lower the transmission down a little to get to the sensor

Cool - thanks for the excellent advise! Last question - where is best place to locate jack stands? (I've been placing them under rear control arm mount)

Accepted Answer

under the rear control arm mout is a good place, but also on the rear suspension subframe, where the bar that gose from side to side between the engine and tras are is also good
