Question

My German shepherd dog is 8 years old. He had a DFHO at about 1-2 years of age. He has done very well until recently when a person accidentally pulled his left hind leg out at a perpendicular angle of at least 45 degrees. His gait has not been the same since. Could this have damaged the DFHO? If so, is there a corrective or mitigative treatment, including but not limited to surgery? If it did involve surgery, would it be too hard on this dog? He is currently taking Dasaquinn, Deramaxx, and Tramadol. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you, XXXXXX XXXXXXX. XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX or 92520 XXX-XXXX.

I've seen this happen before unfortunately and the answer is YES...there is mitigative treatment...and yes surgery again may be necessary.

FHO removes the femoral head and neck...but the body of the dog does not like this and tries to regrow a new head and neck or at least fill in the space between acetabulum and the now missing femoral head and neck.

Pulling on the hip could have done a number of things...even torn or stretch scar tissue and supporting soft-tissue that is just not used to an extended range of motion. Also there is 'arthritis' in that FHO site...guaranteed! and if the pulling on this leg caused the femor and hip bones to rub... a piece of arthritic bone could have broken off or just rubbed raw, down to the nerve fibers. *** This is where new radiographs and perhaps even surgery may be necessary...***

Would I recommend Surgery right away? NO. Radiographs certainly wouldn't hurt and can be very informative so you know with confidence that just seeking therapy is the best route to go initially.

Then find a therapist/vet. I would be using a Therapy Laser on this hip almost immediately...other therapies may be necessary and beneficial but cold laser is where I'd start even without seeing this dog.

Answer: Surgery may benefit but Therapy will certainly help now and may alleviate the need for more surgery.

Go here and find a vet with this laser...my preferenece (no I don't work for them or get paid by them)

Hope this helps...drjohnw

What will laser therapy accomplish?

Would surgery (as a last resort) be unnecessarily hard on this 8-year old dog?

Accepted Answer

Pain reduction
Anti-inflammatory to local tissues
healing of damaged or injured tissue.

Study up on it there is lot of info on the Cutting edge laser website.

Answer

I think surgery would be hard...yes, and especially on an area previously operated on.

By the way my practice now LASERs ALL surgical incisions and wounds immediately post-op. I wish I could say I have verified clinical evidence of the benefits but i don't...but my vet techs are so convinced they won't let me forget it.

(yes a bit 'star-trek' like...using a light beam for wound healing.)
