Question

I have a 5 year old spayed cat. She continues to pee all over our furniture, pillows, pet beds...whatever. We have multiple cats in our home as well as dogs. We've had her since she was born (fostered mom and kittens and eventually adopted them). She has been doing this for three or four years. We've had her checked at the vet with urine samples, US, xrays, blood tests..you name it. All appears normal. She does not defecate outside the boxes. We have multiple boxes that are cleaned daily. We have three extra boxes placed around with different types of litter (we've used the same unscented clumping litter her entire life)in cases she prefers something else. She doesn't use them either. We wash everything she pees on with enzyme cleaner and have now had to throw away a piece of upholstered furniture. She drinks lots of water and eats fine. We have also tried anti-anxiety and anti-depressants, to no avail. We are at a point where we are almost ready to have her euthanized.

See question. We've tried everything anyone has suggested. I forgot to add we've also tried pheremones in addition to everything else. Outdoors is out of the question. She couldn't survive.

Which anti anxiety meds have you tried?

Which litters have you tried?

Was it Feliway you used for the pheromone?

We used amitryptiline (sorry if misspelled). We have it made at a compounding pharmacy so that we can just rub it in her ear and it's absorbed that way. It's way less stressful to her. It was Feliway. We use Tidy Cat unscented clumping in the boxes. I also have a box with newspaper, one with newspaper pellets, and one with Arm and Hammer unscented clumping. The other cats always use the boxes with the Tidy Cat, but I want her to have options. To poop, she always uses the same boxes the other cats do. My husband is at the end of his rope and it's starting to smell like urine which is something we've never had in 20 years of cat ownership.

Accepted Answer

There may be a couple more things to try which could work.

For cleaning a soiled area try Nature's Miracle, Simple Solution, Anti Icky Poo or another enzyme based cleaner for urine odor removal. Cleaning and then using a product like that can remove the odor enough to help limit her using the spots again. If you are dealing with rugs soak the cleaner under the surface into the pad to get it all.

You may need to use a black light to find all the spots to clean. Planet Urine has them

among other places.

You might try Cat Attract litter which has a good record of luring cats into using it. You can read about it here

http://www.preciouscat.com/

and it has a zip code store finder to help you locate it in your area.

For stress related and marking behaviors it has been found by behaviorist Dr Nicholas Dodman at Tufts that Prozac works better than any of the meds previously used. You might talk to your vet about using that. You can read about this below the Feliway info here

Hope this helps you!
