Question

I was given a diagnosis of swine flu over the phone yesterday, having reported symptoms of cough, fever, aches and stomach cramps/diarrehoa. I don't feel as achey and am controlling the fever with paracetomol, but I am worried that the stomach cramps/diarrehoa have got worse. It's now happening much more frequently (approx. every 30 mins) despite my having avoided any solid food today. This has now been going on since the early hours of yesterday morning. I am trying to keep myself hydrated. Is there anything else i can/should do? This is very unusual - normally if I have a stomach upset it only lasts a few hours or a day at most. Thank you, XXXX XXXXXXX

Hy.

A diagnosis of swine flu cannot be given over telephone. At best , a suspicion of flu can be made.

Diagnosis of swine flu is done this way-

On suspicion,
A respiratory sample collected within the first five days of illness is sent to a CDC accredited laboratory for microbiologic examination.

Once diagnosis is confirmed CDC recommends the use of oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir (Relenza) for treatment .

Please follow these guidelines and discuss this with your GP.

Meantime, try Dicyclomine for the stomach cramps, and stay hydrated for the diarrhoea.
You can also start on Prilosec to avoid acid irritations.
