ARE THERE ANY DRUS LIKE PREDISONE THAT DONT HAVE A LOT OF SIDE EFFECTS.. I WAS GIVEN PREDISONE ( 20 MG ) FOR GOUT .. THE GOUT WAS CLEARED UP BUT MY CLARITY OF MIND AND ENERGY WAS LIKE IT WAS WHEN I WAS THIRTY. I AM 53 THREE... HOW LONG CAN YOU TAKE THET M G OF PREDISONE WITHOUT ANY MAJOR PROBLEMS/

Hi and thank you for your question. Prednisone, is a synthetic hormone that is very similar to a hormone made by your body called cortisone. It is used to treat many health problems including gout. While the short term effects of prednisone are manageable and often worth the trade off it takes to help with your gout, long term effects can be life altering and include osteoporosis, Cushing’s syndrome and glaucoma. The shorter duration one takes prednisone, the less chances of long term consequences. Therefore, prednisone is only given short term for gout. why was the clarity of mind and energy so much better... are there natural orany other drug that would give the benifit of better clarity of mind and increased energy

steroids do cause mental status changes in about 10-20% of patients some good, some bad, the reason for this is unclear. In short term use the mental state returns to normal after discontinuation of the prednisone. Some vitamins that have an impact on your mental state, especially Vitamin B6, which is very important for mental clarity.
