Question

RE: 2001 SE Convertible -- my top does not always collapse into the well properly. It goes "cockeyed" as it folds down, and so I raise it again. Sometimes it "self corrects", but usually it continues to malfunction. It was suggested that it may be a problem with the fluid in the mechanism. Any ideas for me?

Accepted Answer

It appears as though there may be a ground problem with one of the actuator hydraulic cylinders. Are you getting error messages or codes along with this condition? Read the attatched bulletin & see if it coincides with your particular issue...

Soft top stops during closing or opening

Cars affected

9-3 CV M98-01 up to and md. chassis number 17004113

Note From VIN 17004113 up to and including VIN 17012859, this extra ground cable was installed in production. From VIN 17012860, a software upgrade to the STC makes this extra ground no longer necessary.

Background

The soft top may stop halfway during closing or opening and the SID unit shows the following message: CHECK SOFT TOP. The following diagnostic trouble codes are generated: B2015 and B2016. The cause may be that the hydraulic cylinder's rod does not have sufficient contact with ground. To obtain solid contact, an extra ground cable can be installed between the 5th bow's mounting and the cylinder.

In case of customer complaints, proceed as follows.

Symptom description

The soft top stops halfway during closing or opening.

Parts required

53 60 581 Ground cable kit (1 pc./car) contains:

^ Ground cable
^ Hose clamp

Procedure

This service information requires that the following diagnostic trouble codes have been generated: B2015 and B2016.

1 Operate the soft top to a position where the 5th bow and soft top cover are standing vertically.

2 Place the ground cable on the inside of the lock clip.
3 Replace the pivot pin on the 5th bow's left cylinder with the new grounded pin.
4 Open the hose clamp and fit it around the upper hydraulic hose's elbow fitting on the 5th bow cylinder.
5 Pull the ground cable under the hydraulic hose connection and under the screw. Fit the hose clamp screw.
Note Fit the ground cable and the lock clip exactly as shown in the figure.
6 Run the soft top 5 full cycles. Check the function and that the ground cable does not get entangled.
7 Connect the diagnostics tool to the car and erase any diagnostic trouble codes.

I don't get the warning "ping" since I don't force it, once it starts misbehaving!

Is this repair something that can be done by a general auto mechanic, or must I take it to the Saab dealer, which is presumably more expensive. I see you're with GM. So could I take it to my local GM/Goodwrench place? (If you're in Tampa, I'll bring it to you.)
