Question

I was diagnosed with pneumonia on Sunday. The ER doctor gave me prednisone and I am taking Bactrim. At a follow up visit with my GP last night she confirmed that it is possible this is a complication due to H1N1. I have mild asthma. I have read that prenisone lowers your bodies immunities and makes it harder for your body to fight off illness but that it also helps your lungs to work. Is this true? If so, should I continue to take it if I have H1N1?

Hello XXXXXXX,

The prednisone will reduce the inflammation and swelling in your lungs, so that they can function properly. With the inflammation, and swelling your lungs will not be able to function, your body does not get oxygenated well and can't heal; your lungs will become more edematous and swollen, and the infection will get worse.

So temporarily it is OK to take prednisone. Its generally not good to take prednisone long term as the side effects will start to be more of a problem than the benefits. But for now, you should follow your doctor's advice. Continue taking your prescribed medicine, rest, lots of fluids.

And get well soon!
