Question

I have a small shitzu about 1 yr old, who seems for the last week to have trouble breathing, almost like coughing up a fur ball, and constipation. He has vomited some, but is still as playful as ever and is eating as normal, what could his illness be?

Dear friend,

Don't worry. This is not a serious situation. It is a reverse sneeze and similar to a human clearing their throat:

Check inside his mouth for a stuck item or any abnormalities. Look under tongue, roof between teeth, etc.

If you dont see anything feed some spongy food. Give an inch of cat lax or even plain vaseline to coat his throat.

I would pick up any dry dog food.Try a small amount of boiled chicken with all fat drained off, chop meat , or baby food with no onion, beef, turkey, etc

Dogs get dehydrated and hypoglycemic very easily

Add unflavored pedialyte to his water 50/50 to hydrate him and balance his electrolytes.

Put a drop of pancake syrup on his tongue to raise his blood sugar in case he is a bit hypoglycemic. That should perk him up.

Also give him one teaspoon a day of plain yogurt to keep "good" bacteria in his system.

If he develops any abdominal pain, bloating, constipation or cannot keep anything down he needs to be seen by a vet.

Please let me know how he is doing. I will always be here for you

I hope your baby feels better very soon..

Best wishes for him,

Terri
