are there any special tools that are needed. or will i need to replace a significant amount of parts.

No you wont need any special tools to do this. you will need new gaskets for the upper intake and the plugs this will be all you need.

the suv has 125000 miles on it. should i not also change the wires, egr valve, air filter and any other related items?

I would change the plug wires as well if they are the ones that came on it.I would not change the egr valve unless it goes bad. as far as the air filter goes you will just have to look at it to see if it is dirty and if so then you will need to replace it as well.
