Question

After losing my husband two years ago, I adopted a girl and a boy kitty, both just under the age of two. They were total strangers to each other, but soon warmed up to each other. They clean each other, the boy chases the girl all over the house, and it can be a real hoot watching them. They really have adorable personalities and I've grown to really love them. They're my adopted "children." However, the past couple of weeks, my boy has started hiding under my bed for no apparent reason. And sometimes, he even runs away from me. I have, at times, given him a scolding for hurting my girl because he is bigger than her and I don't like to have her cry because he's overdone it. But I've never had him behave like he's been doing lately, especially hiding under my bed. He hasn't even come out to sleep with me and the girl, which is highly unusual. I'm truly heartbroken over this change in him and wonder if I should take him to the Vet because he might be sick. He is eating, drinking and using the litter box, so at least that part seems to be normal. Any words of advice would be welcomed. Thank you!

Pet's Sex: Male
Pet's Age: 2

Already Tried:
Reaching under the bed and petting him, giving him a lot of love and attention and trying to coax him out, which is sometimes successful, more often not. I'm not sure what else to try.

Duke goes under the bed sometimes for the entire night, still there in the morning when I wake up. What prompted me to contact you is him going under the bed again at about 8:00 p.m. last night and he hasn't been out since (it's now 4:00 a.m.). I kept calling him, but he wouldn't respond. That's when I found him and gave him loads of attention, petting him and cooing over him. He is eating and eliminating okay, and I haven't heard him do any sneezing. He chased Lady yesterday, but did a quick about face when she ran past me. I found that really odd for him to run the other way when he saw me. I didn't say anything about his chasing her, because he wasn't hurting her. Thanks for your quick response!

Dear XXXXXXX,

I am so sorry Duke is acting unusual. You are right to be concerned because anytime a cat hides, something may be wrong.

You know your babies better than anyone because you are their mommy!

Pull Duke out and check all over his body and lok in his mouth for any pain respses or abnormalities.

He may have a bad tooth, ear infection or something stuck in his mouth. Look under tongue, between teeth, roof and cheek pouches.

If you dont see anything he may have an infection, fever or just be stressed.

A cats appetite is the best barometer of his health so watch for any signs of inapetence, straining to urinate, blood in stool or urine, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, etc.

Please let me know if you notice anything unusual and how your baby is doing. I hope it is nothing serious and he will be fine.

Warmest best wishes,

Terri
