Question

My Sheltie just got back from a dog show. She has had several loose, dark stools in the apartment. Normally, she is very well house-trained. What I cleaned up last I don't think was fecal matter, I think she threw up something that was light-colored but smelled a lot like what has been in her stool. I don't know if she picked up some kind of dog flu at the dog show, or if what she got in her Kong Ball Sunday evening was too rich for her. I have been giving her yogurt which she completely finishes, so there IS an appetite there. She just seems uncomfortable and seems to prefer to sit and pant (even though I keep my apartment at 68 degrees). I have heard some horror stories about contagious junk dogs have brought home from shows, but so far the stuff has been on the east coast. Chloe is an otherwise healthy four-year old Sheltie who has never had any more physical complaint than an occasional anal gland clog. Occasionally, she has had to be expressed. She is current on vaccinations which she received about in the middle of September, which included the shot for kennel cough. She does not have a cough. She is alert.

Dear friend,

I am so sorry Chloe is not feeling well

Diarrhea is caused by parasites or GI upsets or stress:

Your baby can have Immodium or kayopectate:

I would pick up any dog food.Try a small amount of boiled chicken with all fat drained off, chop meat , or baby food with no onion, beef, turkey, etc add cooked white rice or infant rice cereal.

Go very slow so she does not throw it up.

Dogs get dehydrated and hypoglycemic very easily from diarrhea.

Add unflavored pedialyte to her water 50/50 to hydrate her and balance her electrolytes.

Put a drop of pancake syrup on her tongue to raise her blood sugar in case she is a bit hypoglycemic. That should perk her up.

Do not allow her to drink a lot at a time sIf he throws up water, she can lick ice

Keep her on that very light diet of boiled chicken or baby food for 48 hours after the stool is normal.

Also give her one teaspoon a day of plain yogurt to keep "good" bacteria in her system.

If she develops any abdominal pain, bloating, constipation or cannot keep anything down she needs to be seen by a vet.

Please let me know how she is doing. I will always be here for you

I hope your baby feels better very soon..

Best wishes for her,

Terri
