I tried cranking the car after replacing the gears, but it would not crank. Sound like the timing has been interrupted

Accepted Answer

Hello, the first pic is of the cams line ups and crank lineup. The cams line up with small marks at near 12 oclock behind the cam gears. Be careful as this is an interferemce engine meaning the pistons will hit valves, bending the valves if timing is not correct.

  1. Set a flat washer at the bottom of the tensioner body to prevent damage to the body plug.
  2. Press in the tensioner rod slowly using a press or vice. Caution: Pressing the tensioner rod with more than 9,810 N (1,000 kg, 2,200 lb) can damage the tensioner spring.
  3. Insert a pin to hold the tensioner rod in the body as shown.

  1. Install the timing belt in the order specified.
(1)Timing belt (crankshaft) pulley
(2)Idler No.1
(3)LH camshaft pulley (EX)
(4)LH camshaft pulley (IN)
(5)Tensioner pulley
(6)RH camshaft pulley (EX)
(7)RH camshaft pulley (IN)

  1. Push the belt down and install idler pulley No. 2. Tightening torque: 38 - 51 Nm (3.8 - 5.3 m-kg, 28 - 38 ft-lb)
  2. Verify that the timing mark of each pulley is aligned after installation of idler pulley No.2.

  1. Turn the crankshaft twice in the direction of rotation, and realign the timing marks.
  2. Verify that all timing marks are correctly aligned. If necessary, repeat Steps 1 - 5.
  3. Remove the pin from the auto tensioner.
  4. Again turn the crankshaft twice and realign the timing marks.

  1. Check the timing belt deflection. Timing belt deflection: 5 - 7 mm (0.20 - 0.28 in)/98 N (10 kg, 22 lb) Caution: Be sure not to apply tension other than that of the auto tensioner.
  2. If the deflection is not correct, check the timing belt auto tensioner and replace if necessary. Crankshaft pulley: Caution: The crankshaft position sensor rotor is on the rear of the pulley, and can be damaged easily.

The images of your explanation does not show on my computer screen. I replaced the oil seals behind the cam gears, as you and stand in front of the car facing the engine (or the passenger side). I also replaced the oil seal behind the crankshaft. I did nothing to the other 2-cams or cam gears on the right side (as you stand and face the car, or the driver side). Since I disturbed the timing belt do I need to set all marks on the cam gears and the crank shaft (as you have indicated?
