Question

My one year old son has a cough that keeps him awake, a very runny nose, red eyes, and is not sleeping well through the night. He has no fever. I hesitate taking him into the pediatrician....I know what they'll say "Tylenol or Motrin, vicks vapor rub, humidifier. I'm doing those things and the poor little guy is just miserable. It's when I'm up in the middle of the night like now, hearing him fuss and whine in his sleep that I wonder if I should just take him in.....

He has no fever. He's having no difficulty breathing as far as sound wheezy or anything like that. Just can't stop coughing...he acts like it really hurts to cough and I can tell he's trying not to cough.

Thank you for the information,

 

The OTc cough and cold medicine are discouraged for use in infants under age 2 years due to risk of toxicity.

 

You may give her the vitamin c, zinc which help fight the cold in a natural way.The treatment is usually symptomatic in the infants.

 

The oral antibiotics may be prescribed like amoxycillin , cephalexin to treat any associated bacterial infection which are availble on prescription of the doctor.
