Question

I got home tonight and discovered that my two dogs (a 70-pound, Alaskan Malamute/Husky mix and a 30-pound border collie mix) had eaten an entire bag of Halloween candy (I don't even know what was in it.) They had also vomited all over the floor. I don't know which dog ate how much, who vomited how much, or what time they ate the candy, but they've been acting normally ever since. Based on past experiences with the malamute getting into things that are bad for him, I didn't worry because they had vomited and were acting normally. I can keep an eye on the them throughout the night, but I'm worried about leaving them at home while I'm gone tomorrow. If there is going to be a major problem, should it happen quickly enough that I don't need to be concerned?

Optional Information

Pet's Sex: Female
Pet's Age: 3

Already Tried:
We've induced vomiting for things the other dog has gotten into before, but it usually hurts the lining of her stomach, so we didn't do anything this time since she's acting normally and we believe she vomited.

Hi, XXXXXXXX.

The main concerns with the candy of course, would be the chocolate, sugar and fat content. If you believe both dogs have vomited (they both most likely ate the candy), and they're acting normally at this time, that's good, but sometimes symptoms can occur up to 24 hours later, depending upon what was ingested. Here is an article on chocolate toxicity in dogs:

If they have an appetite, are drinking and eliminating as usual, are not having any difficulty breathing, are not hyperactive or trembling, and don't seem to be in any pain, that's encouraging. They might have diarrhea, in addition to the vomiting, and if you're concerned about them when you leave the house tomorrow, would it be possible to have a neighbor, friend or relative, etc., check in on them for you several times, while you're away from home? Besides having them evaluated by a vet to check for any problems from this ingestion before you leave tomorrow, having someone else monitor them, would be your best course of action.

I hope all will be well with both your dogs.
