Question

I have a 2002 Ford Explorer 4.0 V6. The transmission started making noise and slipping. The problem started suddenly and seems to have gotten worse. I took it in and had the transmission flushed and new transmission fluid added. There was no change. The transmission has 150,000 miles on it. Do you think this trany is on it's last leg and should it be replaced? If so, I am considering doing it myself. I changed a transmission in a 1987 Ford T-Bird, but that was a long time ago. Am I biting off more than I can chew?

Hello,
Transmission noise is never good if it's internal as opposed to something external, like loose torque converter bolts or nuts. Sounds like it's just a matter of time before it fails. 150K is pretty good out of most transmissions. As for whether your biting off more than you can chew, it's a 4.3 to 5.3 hour job ( depending on which 4.0 engine you have ) to remove and install the transmission, in a shop, with a hoist, with all the proper equipment. Doing this job on the garage floor is never fun, regardless of your abilities. I don't know about you, but I'm getting too old to manhandle transmissions on my back.
I hope this helps.
Steve
