Question
Hi Michael. My name is Ryan (from Waco,TX) and I have found a '97 Fleetwood Tioga Walkabout for sale-by-owner. *The asking price is $9850. *It has a newer motor w/ less than 5000 miles on it. *Odometer reads 80000 miles. *Carfax report indicates no reported issues *According to Carfax report, it's had 2 owners. 2nd owner got it in '04 with 74000 miles on it. *It's only had 6000 miles put on it over the past 5 years. *Carfax report lists original motor as: 6.8L V10 PFI SOHC 20V *The seller says the "new" motor is a 460-V8 *I'll be using the RV to haul my band from town to town, while pulling a loaded down 5x8 cargo/equipment trailer. QUESTIONS: 1. Do you think I should be concerned about the fact that the original motor was a V10 and now the RV has a V8...especially since I'll always be towing a trailer? 2. From your experience, do RV motors just not last very long??? This will be my 1st RV, but I just thought that most motors lasted longer than 80000 miles. Is this not the case in the RV world? 3. In your experience, how long do RV transmissions last? I'm worried that this one's will fail soon after buying it. 4. Assuming everything else is good on the RV (i.e. hoses, tanks, appliances, no leaks, good transmission, etc), do you think $9850 is a fair asking price for this Class C '97 Fleetwood Tioga Walkabout? Judging from your experience & credentials I know I'll value your opinions. Thanks for any time and consideration spent on my questions. Ryan

Answer
I'm not sure about the condition of the rv except what your telling me here, however the 460 engine is a red flag for me. The conversion would be costly. I could go into the reasons, but I'll just say it would cost more for the conversion than the V-10 replacement. That may be an exageration, but not by much. Plus there would be no gain in switching engines. At the very least I would ask for a weekend to drive it, even do it as a rental for say 200$ that will be applied to the purchase if you keep it. Ok...I just got updated info. The new motor is a V-10 after all. And it was bought brand-new...not refurbished. My main question now is about the transmission.
In your experience, how long do they usually last on RV's?
Again, this one is a '97 Fleetwood Tioga Walkabout with 80000 miles. It's built on a Ford E-350.
Accepted Answer
I have seen both sides with this chassis. Several motorhomes with larger and heavier bodies such as Pace Arrows with almost 40% higher GVWR, I've seen at 125k miles with no problems and others with as little as 10k needed a new trans. The one thing that I can say is if they're going to have problems it's normally early in their life onot at all. So with regular service, your probably safe. Thx again, Jeff
