HI I HAVE A 1999 TROOPER, I BOUGHT IT USED A FEW MONTHS AGO WITH ABOUT 51,000 MILES. AFTER I FOUND OUT THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH "OIL EVAPORATION" FOR A FEW YEARS ON THIS MOTOR {3.5}USES 3 TO 4 QUARTS ON LONG TRIPS OF SAY 200 TO 3OO MILES OR SO. NOT DRIPPING OR LEAKING ANYWHERE THAT I FIND. NOT SMOKING EITHER. AFTER FIGHTING THIS FOR SOME TIME I REPLACED THE EGR VALVE AND THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY FOR THE WHOLE SUMMER IT SEEMED. NOW IT IS BACK TO USING ALOT OF OIL AGAIN. THIS IS A VERY CLEAN AND VERY WELL MAINTAINED VEHICLE. I WOULD CONSIDER REPLACING THE MOTOR IF THERE IS ANYTHING AVAILABLE THAT WOULD REPLACE THE 3.5 IF I HAD TO AND IT WAS ECONOMICAL BUT IT DRIVES GOOD AND STRONG.

Accepted Answer

Inspect the piston rings to determine if they are stuck. These engines are having problems with the oil control rings getting gummed up and stuck, which is causing excessive oil consumption. In most cases if this is the cause you are looking at engine repair. Hope this is helpful.
