Hi , I have 2 poodles. The male apricot,9 years old,is friendly with everyone except when my husband are togther on the couch. Then he growls at my husband. Otherwise he is my husband's biggest fan!We have yelled at him, have had him sit in his kennel, have talked sweetly and pet him, have ignored him. We are married 2 years and we can't take it anymore! I can even sit on the other couch and it is still a problem. Please help me help and understand 'Peaches' behaviour. Thx

Hi XXXXXXXX~

Is your dog neutered?

Has he always done this to your husband, or is this a recent issue?

Any other problems such as growling at people/animals near his food bowl?

Reply

Yes,

Peaches is neutered.

His aggression has progessed through time. I should tell you he growls always on top of my husband ( he is about 10 lbs), with his head staring and growling past my husbands shoulder. Also his tail is wagging. It is very odd.

No nothing with food, very friendly. When I am not aroung and my husband is only home , Peaches is his best freind, wanting to play, be held etc

Accepted Answer

Hi again~

Thanks for answering my questions.

Since Peaches is an older dog and this is a newish behavior, I think the absolute best thing you can do is to have your vet check his thyroid. Often, a thyroid disorder can cause personality changes in a dog and left unchecked, it can only get worse. If this were my dog, I'd absolutely start there.

If the thyroid check comes back normal, then perhaps you should consult with a behaviorist who will come to your house and observe your dog. They'll then be able to tell you what is triggering this behavior and how to go about correcting it.
