Question

My 17 year old son came home today with a severe headache and a little sick to his stomach. After some advil and some peppermint that I rubbed on his forhead he felt well enough to eat. He ate a plate of food, roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, and broccoli. He fell asleep on the couch about nine o'clock. I woke him up about 10:15 and sent him to bed. He asked for more advil so I decided to take his temperture just to be on the safe side. His temp was 95.2 which I thought was pretty low. I thought maybe he had taken it out early so I retook it and it was 95.4. What does it mean when your temperature is so low? Should I be worried?

Advil and I put an extra blanket on his bed because I thought maybe he had a chill and that was why his temp was so low.

Answer

Dear mcc,

Thank you for the information,

There are some common causes of such hypothermia like exposure to cold, hypothyroidism, alcohol, certain drugs, hypoglycaemia, infection, etc. The exposure to cold temperature and water may cause the low temperature in him.

You should not worry and give him warm clothing and blankets. The warm room temperature will also help him in his symptoms.

The other possibility could be the infection which may also cause such headache, stomach discomfort and low temperature and is treated symptomatically for the viral cause. The antibiotics are needed in bacterial infection. The chances of it are less in your son.

Thank you, he usually is so healthy that it scared me a little. A young man in our town just died of the swine flu and he was healthy, so I think I am a little gun shy.
