Question

I am a 38 year old 234 lb African American male and I am 30 lbs overweight. My blood pressure is 140/105 and I've experienced mild headaches over the last two days. Due to my work load I will not be able to see a doctor until this Friday. I am not taking blood pressure medicine and I am concerned about the side affects especially when it comes to sex drive. I accept the fact that I need to be more conscience on what I eat and limit my sodium intake, drink more water, eat vegetables and exercise, however is it too little too late? Should I start making funeral arrangements?

Hi and thank you for your question. Goodness no!! For the next few days, until you can see your Doctor, definitly limit your salt intake and drink plenty of water, no smoking and no alcohol ( both can increase blood pressure) No extreme exertion. Once you see your Dr, he can prescribe a blood pressure pill for you. Not all blood pressure medications cause erectile disfunction. Drugs known as ARBs (angiotensin II receptor blockers, like Losarten) may even help to improve sexual function in men with high blood pressure. I hope this information helps you, if so, please click accept. Thank you. I wish you the best! :-)

With my blood pressure being 140/105 is it possible to significantly lower it naturally without taking blood pressure pills or seeing the doctor?

How high does it have to be before it is reconmended to seek medical help?

If I start exercising more, eating better and drinking more water today can I skip the doctors visit or is my blood pressue too high to take the risk?

Is it true that once you get on blood pressure medicine you have to remain on it?

Accepted Answer

If you are running that kind of blood pressure regularly, your blood pressure is too high to take that risk.. Normal, healthy blood pressure should be less than 120 systolic ( top number) over less than 80 diastolic ( bottom number).
Your Dr might opt to try you on a modified diet and exercise program with close observation, or he may want to try you on a medication as well as a lifestyle channge. It's not true that you will always have to be on a blood pressure medication. If you are able to effectively change the factors contributing to it , it may be possible to keep the blood pressure down without medication. Some factors, like genetics, can't be changed.
