Info Request

Hello. Thanks for writing in. How long ago did she give birth to the kitten? Do you know how many kittens she has? Is this her first litter?

this is her first litter and this is the first kitten. she gave birth to the first and so far only kitten about ten minutes ago. she just moved that one kitten and I think is letting it suckle, but has not delivered anymore.

Answer

Thanks for the information. At this young age, some cats are confused about what they need to do with their kittens. It may just be immaturity, but it can also be nervousness, especially if there are a lot of people standing around and watching her. The best thing to do is to give her some space. If the kitten is now nursing, that is good. She will know what to do from there. Hopefully, she is cleaning the kitten well. Just sit back and don't be in her face, but do keep an eye on her. When other kittens come out, she should lick and tear the placenta, clean the kitten and let the kitten nurse. If you notice that she is not paying much attention to this, you can step in and help. I expect to see kittens every 30 minutes to an hour. If more than 2 to 4 hours has gone by without another kitten, she may need to be examined by a vet. If she starts going into hard contraction for more than 30 minutes to an hour without a kitten, you should have her seen as well. I have included a couple websites that goes over labor issues in cats in more depth. It sounds like she is letting the kitten nurse. If she is not, you may have to get some kitten milk replacer and bottle feed the kittens every couple hours. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Hope this helps.

Accepted Answer

Yeah. I would step in and help. Kind of show her what to do. Make sure you are giving her plenty of room otherwise. She may just be nervous if there are people hovering around her.
