Question

My grandaughter has a pet rabbit inside and today all these short worms came out of the mouth why it was drinking. The rabbit is skinny and very lethargic. Is it too late to help the rabbit or is there something we can do. I know nothing about rabbits.

Info Request

Hello,

Did the worms look like the ones in this photo?

Were they about 1/2 inch long?

If they didn't look like the ones in the photo, will you describe them in detail - color, etc.?

Can you look in the rabbit's mouth for any signs of a wound? Do you see any more worms in there?

Check the rabbit's anal area? Any sign of worms or rice-like bits stuck in the hair? Do you see anything like that in the rabbit's droppings?

How is the rabbit's appetite?

Thank you.

The rabbit isn't eatting. Her cage has been emptied. Her droppings showed of the carrots she had eaten. The droppings show no worms. Her mouth has worms still.

Thank you for getting back to me. As you can tell, the rabbit is in very bad shape. Worms in the mouth are often maggots. They occur when the rabbit ahs a small wound near the mouth or nose. A fly lays eggs there, and when they hatch, maggots begin eating the rabbit's flesh. There are other possibilities, but this seems most likely. You'll need a vet for a certain diagnosis and proper treatment.

Whenever a rabbit stops eating for 12 or more hours, it is considered an emergency. Appetite loss is a very serious symptom. Unlike dogs or humans, a rabbit cannot go very long without eating. The digestive system simply stops working, and the rabbit dies. To be honest with you, if you hope to save the rabbit, you'll need to see a vet as soon as possible. There is nothing you'll be able to do on your own to help the rabbit. This site has a directory of rabbit vets:

A rabbit vet would be best, but if none are near you, any vet will do. I know you were hoping for something to do on your own, and I would like to be able to give you that, but unfortunately, this is a case where there is no home remedy. If you have more questions, just let me know by clicking on REPLY. I hope you'll be able to get help and that the rabbit will recover.
