Question

I had a colonoscopy yesterday. I'm 48 years old. I had it because I'm having bladder problems and they thought something from my colon might be pressing on my bladder. I woke up during the procedure and told them that it hurt and they didn't do anything. It hurt so bad. I ask the doctor later why didn't give me something else to put me and and she claimed that it is normal to wake up during this procedure. The nurse stated that my blood pressure was to low and they could not give me something else. No one I know has woke up duing this. The doctor also stated that mine was difficult because there was a lot of twist and turns. My bladder was really hurting yesterday. I ask her for some pains meds and she would not give me anything yesterday. When I got home the pain was terrible! I even started having pain down the front of my left leg. I am also leaking poo today. I called the doctor and she said my bladder my be irritated from yesteday and come see her tomorrow. What is normal?

Answer

That's good news.. normally if it looks suspicious they tell you that just after the procedure. While it may be normal to fall in and out of awareness during a colonosscopy, its not at all normal to remember if you did. Normally versed is used for just such an occasion so that the patient does not remember any part of the procedure should they become aware at any point in time. Sometimes patients taking a bowel prep that contains oral sodium phosphate may develop something called phosphate nephropathy which affects the kidneys. Do you know which prep you took?

Ma'am,

I took MoviPrep. Should I be haivng pain down my left leg and should my bladder be hurting more than when I went in?

Answer

MoviPrep contains oral sodium phosphate. Are you still having problems with your bladder or has it returned to normal today?

Accepted Answer

I would recommend you go to the emergency room for an evaluation, you should not be feeling this bad after a colonoscopy. While it may not be anything serious, it's better to make sure. I wishyou the best and please let me know how you do.
