no flashing light. the car hesitated a bit when i started it but cranked right up

there could be a number of different failures that could have turned this light on,since it hesitated it may be a faulty mass airflow senro or a plugged fuel filter or fuel pump but its hard to say from here exactly what caused the light to come on for sure as it could be a number of things.You dont have to necessarily tkae it to a dealer to have it checked(but they will have the best knowledge of the situation) as a local shop can scan the codes for you and may be able to diagnose it as well and it may be cheaper,some parts stores might also check the codes for you free of charge as i have seen before,so the best thing to do from here is to have the codes checked to see what turned the light on for sure.I hope this info helped,if you need anything else let me know,Thanks Pete

the last time this happened it was the catalytic converter. will this ruin the car if not fixed. what should i expect to pay if it is this or the problems you mentioned

if it is the problem it can cause backpressure problems in the engine,which can cause lack of power,engine misfires etc.the cost of this part can be from around $500 to $1200 and up to 4 hours labor as it varies from vehicle to vehicle,hope this helped,if you need anything else let me know,Thanks Pete
