Question

My teacup poodle has an infected anal gland - she will see a vet in the morning - could I use some neosporum on it externally tonight? Warm compress?

It is not sore to touch but feels warmish, she has no visible abcess - just swelling. I have not done anything yet

Good evening and thank you for your question.

 

Your poor girl, I am glad you have an appointment tomorrow.

The neosporin will be fine, you can also try the warm compress but a cold compress on there may be better.The cold may help to decrease the swelling and make her more comfortable.

To prevent this problem in the future you may want to add a spoon of real pumpkin to her daily diet to increase her fiber and make it easier for her to express the glands when defecating.

 

I hope this helps make her feel better.

Just topically on area or into the anus with the neosporin?

I would only apply topically, depending on how bad the abscess or impaction is applying pressure in the anus may make it worse. I would wait and let your vet apply medication in the anus if they feel it is necessary.
