Question

Hi. Last few days have been getting a few tiny very sore white spots on the tip of my tongue. I am a 52 yr old male in good health with no underlying health problems I am aware of. I have good oral hygene, in that I have regular dental check ups, with no required treatment apart from the occasional scale and polish - probably a result of too much coffee! I do not have bad breath or other mouth disorders. I havnt changed my diet and eat well. Regular teeth (and tongue)cleaning hasnt seemed to have helped, along with washing my mouth out with diluted TCP, which also hasnt helped. I am very stressed at work, but cope with it well, but do not feel in way `run down`. Any ideas?? John. Bristol UK

Yes they are painful. Very tiny on the surface and sore. I feel absolutely fine, and full of energy with no fever, or discharge, redness etc. Feel great really. Very very slight amount of bleeding when spitting out when cleanimng teeth - hardly noticeable. Too vigorous maybe??

Accepted Answer

Dear john,

There are some common causes of such white sore on tongue like aphthous ulcer, leukoplakia, cancer sores, viral infection, fungal infection, candida, etc.

As per your symptoms the chances of aphthous ulcer should be ruled out first which may cause such symptoms in you.

The treatment is symptomatic with pain killers , good diet, vitamins and minerals, and local application of lgnocaine on the sores. It may take a few days for the symptoms to disappear.

The other cause could be the viral infection which may also be associated with such symptoms and should be treated. The physical examination by doctor will help in finding the cause.

Thanks for your help. Will keep going as I am for the next few days and see if it clears up on its own, as I am just about to go abroad on holiday. Failing that a visit to the Doctor on my return. Cheers
