Question

Have a 2003 montero with a 3.5 and has the multiple misfire code. I pulled the spark plug wires from the thrid coil pack whick is for 3&6 cylinders and it's totally dead. Bought a new coil pack and still no spark ? tried plugging the connector from the coil pack beside it and the coil is working fine. checked the plug and it has power in the black and white lead , but that connector will not fire the coil ?

Answer

Hi,
You have already verified you have 12V at all three black/white stripe wires.

Verify you are getting a pulse ground on pin 2 of each coil.
You should have pulse ground on coils 1 and 2, but not 3 (cyl 3 and 6) by your description. If this is the case, check for pulse ground at pin 11 of the power transistor (vertical flat electrical unit near oil filler neck over center of engine), the wire is brown/red.

If you have pulse there, there is a break in the wiring. If you do not have pulse there either, you likely have a failed power transistor.

The only other failure points woudl be damaged wiring between transistor and PCM, or failed PCM. Neither of which are at all common. The power transistors fail fairly often however, particularly if you wash your engine with a pressure hose :)

If you need any clarification or diagrams, let me know.

Thanks again , I tested the Module and the brown/red wire is dead , no ground pulse coming from it. I just ordered the module and will have it tomorrow.

Thanks : Wally

Very good, you should be fine with that. The odds of it being damaged wiring or a PCM fault are very slim.
