Question

I have a 1990 Chevy Lumina Euro Sedan. My Transmission will not always engage when I place it in gear (forward or reverse). It will move very slowly at high rpm's. If I turn the car off and restart it does work for a while. I sometimes goes back into this situation when the car comes to a stop. It is almost like the car is going into overdrive and not coming out. Is there a way to disable overdrive to see if this is the problem before I have to trash the car because of the transmission??????? Thank, Terry

Hello, the first thing if not done is to check fluid level and condition of the fluid. If discolored and not clean red and if it smeels burnt, you could very well have bad trans. Normall when this trans is stuck or sticking in overdrive ( the torque converter locked) the engine will abrupty stall when placed in gear. kind of like taking you foot off a cluch quick in manual car . The converter not rleasing will cause the engine to quicky stall and usually you can not do anything to get it to move. There is a small square plug on side of trans facing the front of car. It may be blue in color. it will be on the drivers side under hood down a little low on the trans. If you unplug this, you diable the torque converter lockup. your description leads me to fell you have a trans that has failed.

The fluids have been checked, and a mechanic (my bother-in-law) has changed the filter and fluids anyway. He tells me that the overdrive is not the problem, but the fluids seem fine and have not ever smelled burnt or looked brown in color. A friend said he had this problem and disconnected the overdrive, but doesnt remember how he did it.
