Hi,
I have reviewed the guide - what didn't work? Where does it fall over?
Thanks.
I am not sure I can agree yet
Did you see this guide?
I just want to know if we are working from the same knowledge.

Very well. I will set this as the answer. If you are happy with it - you can accept - if you need further assistance - just ask. As far as tonight - I am going to leave for awhile - so your timing is good. Let me know if I can be of further assistance and only accept this answer if it works!
Have a good night.

Is the behavior the same over a reboot?
It sounds like it is working but maybe it is still a configuration issue:
Try Reboot - and unplug USB -
Open a terminal/console.
Type: uname -a
(this will be output of your Kernel name - tell me what it says)
Attach the modem and wait 30 seconds
Type: lsusb
(This should tell you the vendor and product ID's)
Type: ls /dev/ttyU* /dev/ttyA* /dev/ttyH*
(to see any port created)
Type: dmesg
(last lines show ports and storage drive created sr1??)
Type: eject sr1
(replace 'sr1' with the one found on dmesg)
wait 30 seconds and retry lsusb and ls /dev/...
Try Type: sudo wvdialconf
(if any /dev/ttyUSBx was found)
IF not managed
Type: sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0xABCD product=0xEFGH('ABCD' and 'EFGH' are from the last lsusb command)
retry
Type: sudo wvdialconf
Once you are connected - can you please go to a console window and type the following:
Type: sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
Then
Type: ifconfig
You should see eth0 BROADCAST UP and an IP address.
Try to connect to the web.
