Answer

Hello!

I have received your question regarding Windows Media Player.

In order to repair the software, I would first try to reinstall the application.

Please download the latest version from Microsoft's website here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/AllDownloads.aspx

If this does not resolve the problem, please let me know and I will further troubleshoot your issue.

Thank you!

More info the original OS was Vista home edition, I recently upgraded to windows 7....

Answer

OK the steps will be slightly different since this is Windows 7. In order to re-install we'll need to perform a refresh of the Windows system files. To do this: 1) Click Start and type: command prompt. 2) Right click to run as Administrator. 3) Type: sfc /scannow. 4) Restart the computer. Please let me know the outcome after performing these steps. Thank you

Info Request

Could you clarify what you mean when you are unable to "activate" Windows Media Player? Does the application open? Do you receive an error when you attempt to play a file? Thank you!

It will not open at all and I do not receive any error msgs. This problem started with the vista OS and carried on thru to windows 7 when I upgraded. With vista I got an error msg stating I was missing a file. I was unable to uninstall because I was using a older version. I was then told that if I upgraded to windows 7 this problem would go away. Not true!!!

Answer

OK, lets try and remove and reinstall the Windows Media component from Windows 7.

To do this, first open the Control Panel. Select Programs & Features.

Select the option on the left that says "Turn Windows Features On or Off"

UN-check the box next to "Media Features", click OK, and then reboot.

Follow these same steps, but RE-check the Media Features box. This will replace the files for Windows Media Player.

Then lets test to see if it opens.

Click on the Start button. And type in "wmplayer" and hit enter. This should then open Windows Media Player.

Please let me know the outcome after you have performed these steps.

Thank you!

I did what you instructed, but when I tried to open WMP my Vipre anti virus program blocked it. It indicated that the WMP setup utility was bad. The file blocked was wmplayer.exe with a moderate risk level.

Answer

OK great, that's good information.

So, we'll need to make an exception for the Windows Media Player to run. This will prevent Vipre from scanning the application and block it from starting up.

To do this, open Vipre. And click on the Manage tab.

Click the option to "View Allowed Items", then click "Add"

Select the option for "Allow file by full path"

You want to select the folder C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\

then select the file "wmplayer.exe"

I have also attached a screenshot here to show the process.

Please continue to update the case if you have additional questions with this process.

Thank you!

I got the 1st window to open, then got the following error msg:

"the file wmplayer.exe has a version number of 12.0.7600.16415 where 0.2009.8.29 was expected. Windows Media Player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled.

Do you want to install the Player from t he Microsoft Web Site"?

Excellent. We're making progress.

I need you to follow these steps now to complete the re-registration of the Windows Media components:

1. Close down Windows Media Player

2. Click Start, click All Programs, and click Accessories.

3. Right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator.

4. Click Continue or provide Administrator credentials if prompted.

5. In the Command Prompt type the following and press Enter:

UNREGMP2.EXE /UPDATEWMPVERSION

**Please note the space after UNREGMP2.exe**
