Question

I have an 8 month old Golden Retriever. Friday evening he started limping & could not even make it up the stairs. On Saturday his ankle swelled to 3 times the normal size. His vet gave him an injection of Carpofen (Rimadyl) and sent him home with the same pills for pain and swelling as needed. By Saturday evening the swelling was down & he was running around. Sunday he was doing the same. By this morning (Monday) his whole leg started to swell. I took him back to the vet. They said the x-ray looked fine but he had bad bruising on the inside of the ankle. They also stated because of the location of the bruising and because the fluid was so loose they felt it was due to a bite of some sort. I just have a hard time believing a bite could be responsible for so much swelling & a dog barely being able to walk. Does this sound plausible? It should be noted I took him in 2 weeks ago for a problem with this same leg. They did not take an x-ray but injected a steroid.

This might be a sign of a bleeding issue leading to fluid build up and the bruising seen.

Dogs that ingest rodent bait can have blood clotting issues which you can read about here

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_rat_poison.html

and dogs with tick bite disease can have a bleeging issue too

http://www.mirage-samoyeds.com/tick.htm

And this might be an issue called DIC which can be triggered with a bite

http://www.veterinary-hematology.com/DIC1104.htm

among other health issues.

Or a problem called thrombocytopenia

An allergic reaction to a bite might cause this, as could a blood clot or a problem with the lymphatic system, but if you see any abdominal bruises, red spots on gums or tongue, bleeding from nose, or anal area, or blood in urine or stool you may want the vet to check a blood coagulation time.

You can read about the lymphatic system here

I would suggest if your vet cannot give you a diagnosis that you consider asking for a referral to a small animal internal medicine specialist.

Hope this helps you!
