Question
I'm an RN, 60 yr old,and have taken many flu shots! Friday, I received the standard flu vaccine from a reliable pharmacy with minimal soreness Friday night at injection site (not uncommon). Sunday I work up to extreme dizziness and nystagmus!! Very frightening! As I sat up, it started to disappear, but took 1-2 min. to subside!! Since then I have been 'off'...feeling, nausea, lethargic, and have 4 more episodes of the same, two last night! Called in 'sick' today...is this a shot reaction...am not taking anything else except HRN and Thyroid, all labs came back within normal last week for P.Exam...need to know where to go with this. Thanks, X. XXXXX.

Answer
Hello; Thank you for writing in today. Your particular symptoms would not be considered typical side effects of the influenza vaccine. Although people can manifest unique side effects, there is some concern that this may be due to some other separate issue. In particular, your symptoms are similar to those manifested by persons with inner ear disorders, such as infection, vertigo, or Meniere's disease, and some neurological disorders. These types of disorders can manifest at any time. Unfortunately, your symptoms may have coincidentally began around the same time of your influenza vaccine. At this point, I really would recommend further evaluation, particularly focusing on your ears and a neurological assessment. Underlying conditions should be ruled out, before assuming this is just influenza vaccine related side effects. I hope you understand why I would recommend further evaluation. If you have any additional questions, concerns, or need clarification, please let me know. Lisa
