Info Request

Hello; Thank you for writing in today. I want to provide you with the best possible information, so I have a few questions. I hope you understand. Can you tell me more about the lump, particularly the size and exact location, if possible? Also, any other symptoms, such as itching, burning, pain, or bleeding? Please let me know. Lisa

Hi There,

It is right on the edge of the rectum and feels as tough it is oblong in shape more like a swollen muscle. It is only slightly painful, but it does not really itch or anything like that.

Accepted Answer

Hello; Thank you for responding. This bulge is most likely a hernia or hemorrhoid. One is a muscular disorder and one is a venous disorder. Hemorrhoids are more common. Rectal hernias are actually quite rare. Hemorrhoids are actually often mistaken for rectal hernias. It can be difficult for a person to differentiate between the two; however, most providers are able to identify these conditions quite easily within the office setting. Since you were particularly active this week, you should know that certain activities can cause increased intra-abdominal pressure. An increase in this pressure increases both your risk of hernia and hemorrhoids. Either way, I would recommend evaluation. Hernias generally require surgical repair. Hemorrhoids are usually well managed by using ointments to reduce inflammation and promote vasoconstriction. I hope this helps answer your question. If you have additional questions or concerns, please let me know. Lisa
