Answer

Hello; Thank you for answering these questions. I know that questions are a hassle, but the information helps to answer more specifically. The Pap smear is actually a collection of cervical cells. The Pap smear cells are assessed to look for cervical tissue changes related to cancer. As for the discharge, this is usually sent out to check for infection. Many different infections, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, manifest as discharge; however, other bacterial or fungal infections, not sexually related, can also cause discharge. The Pap results will be the most telling with regard to cervical cancer. The discharge will be evaluated to rule out infection. I hope this helps to explain. If you have additional questions or concerns, please let me know. Lisa

ok so the sample that they took from my discharge is to look for std and other kinds of infections,, not cancer.. that pap smear would dermine that!!! actually u being great help.. i thought that was the reason why they send the sample of my discharge i feel better i did do that pap smear.. but i was worried about the discharge thnks lisa

Accepted Answer

Yes, cervical discharge is most often concerning for possible infection. Cervical cancer can cause discharge; however, discharge is most commonly concerning for infection. The Pap will screen for cervical cancer. Glad I could help. Have a good evening. Lisa

NOW SHE ALSO SAID I HAD A LIL DISCHARGE SHE SAID SHE LOOKED ON HER MICROSCOPE AND EVERYTHING SEEMS ?K .. SO WHY DID SHE SEND IT TO THELAP? SO WHAT ARE THEY GONNA LOOK FOR ON THAT SAMPLE OF DISCHARGE? I KNOW IS NOT FOR CANCER CAUSE THATS Y HAD THE PAP SMEAR DONE.. CAN SOME 1 HELP

Answer

As I mentioned, the discharge is likely being sent to the lab to rule out infections. Most discharge is from infection. Since she looked at it at the office, she is just sending it in to confirm that it's not infection. The Pap smear checks for abnormal cells, such as cervical cancer cells; however, none of this is out of the ordinary. None of this indicates that you have cervical cancer. Anytime there is discharge, providers just want to make sure there is no infection. This sounds like a pretty routine appointment. I want you to feel comfortable with the information. If the information is not clear, please let me know, and I am happy to clarify. Again, discharge is usually sent to the lab to check for infection. Paps are routine screenings to make sure the cervix is healthy. Lisa

hey i have 1 question to ask,, i always been a nervous nelly,,i notice 1thing right on my collar bone i press in and i feel like a lil ball maybe a lil smaller that abean u cannot see it is not visible only if i really look for it is when i can really feel it and if i touch it it moves around is that something i should worry about .. i mean i just ahad a physical the result already came bk everything came back normal is there anything i should do

Posted by Lisa, MSN, FNP-BC, CCRN 15 days and 13 hours ago.

Answer

If this is right on the collar bone, it may be just part of the bone you are feeling. If you look at a picture of a collar bone, there is a part that is rounded and more prominent. Now, if it is not the bone itself, it is possibly a lymph node. Either way, this is likely normal; however, since you only now noticed it, it would be best to report it to your provider. Your provider could in fact evaluate it and confirm whether it is a normal finding. I hope this helps. Lisa

Now like I said is not on the collar but but the lil ball is right on top and the the collar bone is right nest may be I'm explaining wrong.. U know my english is not all that perfect lol ... but atleast u understand..and actually u been great help as well .I mean is right between the collar bone idk what it is but is not visible at all and I really need to dig in it to find it and it moves when I touched it lisa I'm so sorry don't want to drive u nuts but thanks a million anyway.. All my lab work is bk everyting came bk negative.. But the only thing that's not in yet is my pap smear is still in process how long does it take for the results 2 get bk?

Answer

Well, this may actually be a lymph node. Lymph nodes inflammation is common. Even though you had a physical exam, if you still notice the area after a few weeks, report it. Any new and prolonged lymph node swelling should be reported. That way your provider can evaluate it to ensure that it's a normal finding or look for reasons. I don't think it's anything to significant to worry about, but, again, if it remains for awhile, report it. As for blood work and cancer, yes, some cancers do show up on routine blood work; however, some do not. Cancer is concerning for any age group; however, remember, most 35 year olds do not have cancer. Think positive. Your physical exam was normal and so was your blood work. You don't seem to have any symptoms of cancer, such as extreme weight loss or pain, so cancer may not be a big concern for you. As for the PAP it can take a few weeks to get the results. Usually 2-4 weeks. Even if your Pap were to come back abnormal, this could be due to a few things. Even an abnormal Pap does not necessarily mean cancer. Stay positive. You have never had an abnormal Pap, which is good. Also, remember, even an abnormal Pap does not always mean cancer. Sometimes abnormal Paps are due to inflammation and other reasons. I hope this helps. Lisa

Answer

I am so glad your results came back normal. I think you might be able to relax a bit now. I know it's always easier said than done. It is really easy to be anxious when it's your own body and health. For now, you have had a normal physical exam, blood work, and Pap. This is great. It indicates that you are heathy. The 14 dollars accept is usually for the answer to your initial question. The thread can continue when people have more questions. If those questions are answered to your satisfaction, they you can hit accept again for another fee. The $14 is not an ongoing deposit. What you pay is based on your satisfaction with our answers and service, which is why a new accept tab appears with new answers. I know it can be a bit confusing. I hope this helps to clarify the process. Have a great day. Lisa
