Question

My hamster is a one year old female syrian. She seems to be generally healthy and is eating and drinking as normal. However over the last 2 days i have noticed a very strong foul smell coming off her, that can be smelt from the other side of the room. I've cleaned out the cage and it is definatly her that the smell is coming from and not the cage. She is cleaned out fully every 5-7 days and her toilet is cleaned out every other day so she is kept very clean. She has a funny smell when she is scenting but never anything as bad as this, it is a very different smell to normal. Her stools are formed and there is no blood or diarrhoea but she does have a bit of a dirty bottom.

Info Request

Hello,

What does the wetness on her bottom look like - urine, feces, blood, etc.?

Check her genitals - does there seem to be a discharge from them?

Is there any swelling around the back end, or the abdomen?

Thank you.

She doesnt have any swelling around her back end or abdomen.

It looks like faeces around her bottom.

Thank you for getting back to me. Even though you're seeing some well-formed stools, your hamster may have wet-tail. If the hamster's bottom is wet with feces, there really isn't any other explanation. Your hamster will need to be seen by a vet. The remedies you can buy in pet stores are ineffective. These sites have directories of vets who treat small rodents:

Until you can see a vet, remove your hamster's regular food. Give her some dark toast - almost burned. The charcoal in it can help. I also recommend giving her some Pedialyte (made for human infants and available in discount stores and pharmacies). Dehydration occurs quickly with wet-tail. Use a syringe to put a few drops in the side of her mouth. For the first hour, give her a couple drops every ten minutes. After that, give it to her once per hour.
