what exactly do you mean by id # if it is the keycode for win98 it might be on the side of the computer. you should be able to avoid putting that in if you run the recovery disk FROM WINDOWS.

WINDOWS IS ASKING FOR A KEY CODE #

This is the keycode for windows. it should have been on the package that the recovery disk came with or pasted on a sticker somewhere on the side of the computer. do you still have a working version of windows on the computer? if so you can run the recovery disk from windows and it should pick up the key code from the installed software. your other option is to get ahold of hp and give them the model number and serial number of your computer and see if they can give you a key code or a replacement recovery disk

if you can still boot into windows you can get the key code from the registry

start button then run

type regedit into the box then hit run/ok

in the regestry editor that pops up

expand with + sign

HKEY LOCAL MACHINE

SOFTWARE

MICROSOFT

WINDOWS

CURRENT VERSION

PRODUCT ID.

 

on the other side under product id will be the keycode.
