Question

When I use skype to call my son, he gets a lot of static and his voice keeps breaking so that I can't understand some of his words.

Hi XXXXXX,

This may have nothing to do with your computer itself, but with your internet connection or the internet connection of the person you are trying to call.

Skype uses VoIP and needs a very stable internet connection, or the connection will have static and breaking.

I will show you a way to test this:

This is a VoIP quality of service test. What it will do is initiate a sample phone call and record the results. It will measure a couple things.

Click on the button that says: "Click to start test"

We will be looking at Average Jitter and Packet Loss. The test will also measure the speed of your internet connection.

Your line jitter should be at or below 2ms and your packet loss should be at or below 1%. Anything more than this and you will have call quality issues.

If yours turns up ok, have your son run the same test. Both parties will need to be in the green.

Once you figure out which end is having trouble, there are two things you can do to try and solve it. One is to eliminate anything on your network that may be causing a slowing down of your speed. Try to connect your computer right to your modem instead of to a router, switch, etc. If you do this and your test still does not look good, you may need to call your internet service provider and have them adjust the bandwith or line signal to correct it.
