Question

My 330 cummins in my motorhome runs beautifully and has for the 30k miles I have driven it and towed my jeep grand cherokee. However, at a campground about 2 weeks ago when I started the engine to warm up while I did the disconnect activities, I noticed a rather pronounced clicking noise. The noise goes away after I drive and the engine gets to operating temperature, but it re-appears after it sits for a night and I start it up the next morning. I checked the oil to make sure that wasn't the issue and it is full. It may need an oil change (it has been about 10k miles), but would that be responsible for a clicking?

Optional Information

Year: 2006
Make (other): Monaco
Model: Knight
Engine: Cummins 330

Already Tried:
Nothing, but am getting ready to go to a cummins repair shop. Problem is I have to leave it over night and ask them to start it in the morning to replicate the clicking noise. All I have done is make sure the oil level is appropriate.

Hi There!!!

Thanks for Choosing Just Answer.....

I must say this is odd that you are hearing a clicking noise when the engine is cold. I would at this point do the oil change you are due. I would also check the cooling fan and make sure it is not rubbing on the fan shroud or hitting a screw. You should be able to spin it by hand and listen for any noises. When the engine heats up the fan should spin faster and the noise might only be heard when the fan is on a slower speed. I would also inspect the belt make sure it is in good condition. The last thing I would do is pull the engine access cover and inspect the exhaust manifold, make sure the manifold is not cracked and the gaskets are not leaking, normally you will have a build up of soot if a gasket is leaking, normally a bad or cracked manifold will make a noise when you put the coach in drive, it will be louder... IF none of these things seem to be the cause I would get to a cummins coach care so they can troubleshoot some more, also inspect your exhaust piping and hangers.... Hope this helps..
