Question
I have a pair of Yanmar 6LY2a-STP’s in a Formula 2005 40 PC on an inland lake in Kentucky. The boat stays in the water all year. This past weekend I changed oil and winterized engines (I hope!). To drain the sea water exchange system, I (1) drained the seacock at the rear of the engine close to the turbo intake; (2) removed the hose that runs from the bottom of the heat exchanger on both sides of the engine to the cooling for the driveshaft coupling; and, (3) removed the impeller covers from the sea water pumps. In all case fresh water (without antifreeze) came out. I also used a shop vac with a reduction hose and blew air through all the points here I removed hoses and open seacock. Does it sound like I missed anything? PS – Does anyone ever remove the main inlet hose and draw antifreeze through the system with the hose and bucket method? Thank you! Bryan Woods Hebron, KY

Sbontheh-Thanks for asking. It sounds like you have done a good job on the raw water side of the engine. A few more things. Make sure the fresh water/ anti freeze side of the engine has fresh 50/50 mix.
Also you should be sure to have changed the oil just before the winterzation. The oil contains acids that should not sit for a long time as it increaces the corrotion. This is not a huge deal as long as the oil is reltivily fresh.
It is very common to such the pink/RV anti freeze through the seacock as a method of winterizing, but if you have completely removed the water from the raw water side of the engine this is just as good.
Also add a dab of silicon greece around the impeller and leave the impeller cover loose till your ready to use the boat again. this prevents the impeller from grabbing the cover or pump and being ruined at the start of the season.
Thanks for asking
