Question

I strained my stomach/abdominal muscles on my right side lifting heavy boxes about 9 days ago. I iced the area within the first 48 hours and have been putting heat on it lately. I went to my doctor who told me to 'rest' and gave me a muscle relaxer and a prescription anti-inflamatory. I tried them and didn't like them and so have gone back to my advil. My question is: how do I rehab? How do I get back to my yoga, machines at the gym and my 4 mile walks? Can I do this on my own or do I need physical therapy? I am going crazy already from resting from my exercise routine. I am not a youngster but am a 64 year old woman so should I expect a much longer recovery. How long? Thanks for any information you can share.

Answer

The first thing is to return to gentle exercise, so walking is a good start and then you can gradually introduce gentle stretches but I would leave the weights at the gym for another couple of weeks. Your body will tell you when you are starting to overdo things, so do not 'push through' the pain but use it as a marker for stepping back a bit.

You may want to see a physical therapist or trainer for help in returning back to the machines, and you will need to start gentle again with those and build up to your previous limits over time.

Do you think I should also wait a couple of weeks before I return to my yoga class?

Accepted Answer

You will be slightly out of condition, after the gap as well as sore so you will not be able to do the more complicated workouts, however gentle body stretches and curls in yoga may be fine as long as you warm up/down adequately and stop if pain occurs.
