Hi!
Transmission Expert Here!
Your lexus uses an electonic solenoid to enable your overdrive. This solenoid is engergized via your PCM, based on many inputs from your vehicle (such as vehicle speed or throttle position).
To determine an electrical fault, you may have a check engine light on, or blinking when fault is occuring. If you do, the code must be retrieved, and please get back to me with the code.
If no electrical fault is there (no flashing light or check engine light) suspect mechanically sticking shift solenoid, or shift valve. The easiest way to fix this would be to flush your transaxle with required Toyota Transmission Fluid (availible only at dealer), and it may free any contaminet that is causing the stuck component.
Thanks
Nick.
